Interesting topic, DullBlade.
It's hard to pick one word to sum up one's MA. I kinda have two. When I train, what comes to mind is:
Liberation and Discipline

Fear
Its a gift that keeps you sharp.
Once you start to think of yourself as a "tough guy" then your already starting to lose you edge.
I read once (Ellis Amdurs book Dueling with O-Sensei I think)
My paraphrase
Guy was a trained fighter and crack shot, with alot of life or death battles under his belt.
He is walking home one night and he sees a group of street punks walking to him.
He thinks to himself, "huh screw them! I am a trained fighter, these guys are just young punks--NO-WAY am I going to give ground to THEM.
It gets rough and I have my pistol right here!!!"
He realized what his thought process was, crossed the street and quit his job the next day.
He had lost the correct mindset--and he knew that he or OTHERS could be badly hurt or killed for his lapse.

Interesting how MA means something different to everyone. My word would be:
Understanding.
To me, MA is an understanding of the human body (and weapons) and how it can be used as a tool to protect yourself and the ones you love. It is also an understanding of the consequences of your actions and an understanding of how important it is to seek non-violent means to solve conflict wherever possible. It means understanding your responsibility to use your techniques appropriately because you have the ability to. To me this understanding makes the difference between a martial artist and an untrained fighter.
Zanshin.
"total attention to the moment: the focusing of the mind (without thought or emotion) on everything around them."

Looking back at this thread, I forgot that I posted here and I was about to post again. Ironically, I was about to post "understanding" again. Guess that means I was right the first time.
