Tai Chi

Learn this slow moving, meditative and gentle martial art from a true master of this form. Dr. Shen will demonstrate and explain this beautiful set of movements that will assist in reducing stress, enhance the immune system and gently stretch and exercise the body. An ideal exercise for people of all ages and physical conditions, tai chi has caught the imagination of the west and this ancient eastern practice is now benefiting thousands physically, mentally and spiritually. Experience a taste of this energy gathering practice and it may just change your life.

The short-form set developed and perfected by Dr. Shen utilizes the classic Yang style and focuses on using body movements in circular motions to relax the mind and allow chi to enter and flow through the body. Dr. Shen’s tai chi is a pure form with a long history learned from his father, a tai chi master and has been taught to thousands in China, Japan and Canada.

Both beginners and advanced students will benefit in this all day participatory class. (Saturday 9:00 Am to 4:00 PM)

Qi Gong/ Qi Medicine

Long practiced in the Far East, qi gong (also known as chi kung and chi gong) is a powerful series of energy gathering exercises using breathing and movement to regulate the mind, body and spirit and to improve overall health. Dr. Shen is a leading researcher in this field and will teach techniques one can easily learn and master in hours. Qi gong is highly recommended an easy and effective way to reduce stress and feel more energized. (Sunday 9:00 AM to 12 PM)

Qi medicine involves control and projection of qi (chi) to facilitate body and mind balance in oneself and others. Dr. Shen will share his experience and his recent findings in Japan relating to human energy (qi) to the healing process. This participatory workshop will appeal to both practice healers and those who are interested in learning to restore and maintain balance in themselves and in assisting the healing of others. (Sunday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM)

Dr. Zaiwen Shen was born in Shanghai China in 1946. He started learning Qigong (branch of Chinese medicine specializing in methods of developing and manipulating internal energy) and Chinese martial arts, such as tai chi, Bua Gua and Hsing-I at the age of six, and Chinese Medicine at the age of 13 from his father who was a famous Chinese Qigong master and teacher of martial arts and his uncle, a master of Tai Chi.

In 1978 when Dr. Shen was in graduate school at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), he conducted research in Qigong under the famous Qigong researcher, Professor Yagu Lin. Later he became the first student to be given a Master’s degree in medicine based on his research of Qigong in China. After graduation he worked at the Chinese Medicine Institute of Shanghai University of TCM (presently the Shanghai Qigong Institute) as a researcher and doctor.

Dr. Shen then moved to Japan (1984) where he studied neuro-physiology and thermal-physiology. He received a PH.D. in those fields from the Medical School of Osaka University. While in Japan he also lectured and gave seminars on Qigong, Acupuncture and TCM.

In 1987 he moved to Canada and became a researcher in the field of physiology as a guest Professor at Guelph University. He also established two clinics in Guelph and Toronto under the auspices of the Chinese and Japanese Health Institute where he treated patients using acupuncture, shiatsu, qigong and herbal medicine. At these institutes and in seminars at Guelph University he also conducted student classes in Qigong, tai chi, TCM and other Chinese internal martial arts. He also frequently appeared on TV and lectured widely throughout North America in an effort to educate about Qigong and related subjects.

In 1994 Dr. Shen returned to Japan, accepting a position of Professor in the Health Science Department and Graduate School of Health Science at Chukyo Women’s University. He currently teaches both Health Sciences and in his own Qigong related program in Health Refreshment Science and Health Sports as well as Tai chi as part of the University’s curriculum.

At the University he also conducts ongoing research into many aspects of Qigong (and related topics of Qigong Healing Techniques, Qi Medicine, Wai Qi, Li Qi and Nei Qi) and has authored many papers on these topics and the history of Qigong published in various academic journals. He also actively teaches Qigong, tai chi and related internal Chinese Martial Arts, and maintains a Chinese Acupuncture/Qigong healing practice in several cities.

Dr. Shen authored a book on his own family practice of Qigong exercises, and his video tapes on Tai Chi Qigong, Qigong For Staying Healthy, Practicing Of Wai Qi Therapy, Hsing-I, Bequa Zhang, and Dr. Shen’s Short Form Tai Chin and other topics are sold throughout the world. He also frequently returns to Guelph, Canada for seminars and to conduct continuing education for his Qigong, and Tai chi students in Canada and the US.
