What is Iaijutsu?
Iaijutsu is the art of drawing and cutting in a single
motion, using the Katana or Japanese long sword. There
are currently over 500 Ryu, or Schools, of Iaijutsu
catalogued in Japan. Until the time of Hayashizaki
Jinsuke, considered by many be the founder of Iaijutsu,
Iaijutsu was part of most schools of Kenjutsu, or

What is Tamiya
Ryu Iaijutsu?
Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu was founded by Tamiya Heibei
Narimasa during the Tempo Era (1573-1591). He was
appointed as Sword Instructor to the first three Tokugawa
Shogun (Military Leaders of Japan), and was a student
of Hayashizaki Jinsuke. In 1797 Tsumaki Junjiro Mototsugu
inherited the school and since then the Tsumaki family
have succeeded through to the present, Grand Master
Tsumaki Seirin. The school's theories consist of "Omote
no Maki" (11 volumes, or Kata) and "Koran
no Maki" (14 volumes, or Kata). It is based on
"forms", for example how use the scabbard
inlet (Koiguchi) and how to use scabbard hand (Sayabana).
The Kata of "Omote no Maki" are as follows:
1. Ipponme - Inseam
2. Nihonme - Oshinuki
3. Sanbonme - Yokemi
4. Yonhonme - Mawari Kakari
5. Gohonme - Mune no Katana
6. Ropponme - Tsuka Hazushi
7. Nanahonme - Tsuki Tome
8. Happonme - Shiranami
9. Kyuhonme - Nigemi
10. Juuhonme - Oitachi
